Baraboo, WI. – Gary Lee Higgins, age 78, of Baraboo, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at SSM St. Clare Hospital. Gary was born on November 12, 1946 in Baraboo, Wisconsin the son of Carl and Aletha (Jones) Higgins.


Gary graduated from Baraboo High School and was drafted into the United State Army serving in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the states and married Peggy Gowey at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Baraboo. From this union they had three children, Nathaniel, Ryan and Chelley. Gary then married Beverly Christianson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on October 20, 1984 in Baraboo.


Gary drove semi-truck for several local area businesses for over 33 years. He was a member of the VVA Chapter #221 of Portage, Wisconsin, where he participated in public speaking, parade walks, and security at county fairs.


In his spare time, Gary enjoyed the outdoors with hunting, camping, and fishing on charter boats with his son, Ryan, and his grandson, Hunter. He enjoyed visiting the zoo and the outdoor safari in Marquette County. He loved being with family and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.


Gary leaves behind his wife, Beverly; three children, Nathaniel (Rebekah) Higgins, Ryan (Christie) Higgins and Chelley Higgins; four grandchildren, Connor, Cullen, Alexis, and Hunter Higgins; brother, Ralph “Digger” Higgins; several nieces and nephews; two God-children, Savanna Pulsfus and Mindy Bockomy; and good friend, Evan Wollschlager.


In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by two nephews, Jason Higgins and Arnold Christianson; brother-in-law, Oliver Christianson; and good friend, Larry Cuff.



Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at Baldwin Funeral Services, 520 East St., Baraboo, WI, with Pastor William “Bill” Harris officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Baraboo, with military honors provided by VFW Greenwood Memorial Post #987 and VVA Chapter #221.
