Dorothy "Sis" (Aland) King

August 29, 2013

Dorothy “Sis” (Aland) King, 91 years of age, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at St. Clare Meadows Care Center in Baraboo. She was born in Baraboo, on July 24, 1922, the daughter of John and Anna (Hinz) Aland. Sis and Harold C. “Gus” King were high school sweethearts, and were united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Baraboo, on “October the Tooth,” 1940, as they liked to refer to it. They were married for over 72 years and raised five daughters. Sis had been employed as a coil winder at Industrial Coils, and later, at Neco where she was also a union steward. Never a shrinking violet, Sis had the courage of her convictions, and freely spoke-up for herself and others, setting an example of female equality for her daughters. She was a social butterfly, and a sun worshipper who enjoyed basking at Devil’s Lake in the summer months.Playing cards, particularly 500 up until December of 2012, creating ceramic works, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and bowling were activities she particularly enjoyed. Always ready for an outing or game for a good time, she traveled to Europe, Mexico, Alaska and the continental United States with relatives, friends, and bowling teams. Mom was a good cook, and always told us, “if you can read, you can cook,” and she passed on her legacy and recipes to her five daughters. Dorothy “Sis” King is survived by five daughters, Joan (Phil) Traxler of Marshfield, Pamela (Stuart) Vorpagel of Burlington, Constance (Roger) Joppa of Duluth, Minn., Susan (Thomas) Holmes of Baraboo, and Debra (Barry) Marcus of Sacramento, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Stahler of Milwaukee; and several nieces; and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Sis was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Boyer Hoppe; and two brothers, Donald and Robert Aland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 304 East St., in Baraboo, with Fr. Jay Poster and Fr. Mark Joppa, grandson/godson of Dorothy, co-officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at the Rago-Baldwin Funeral Home, 520 East St., in Baraboo, and at the church on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until time of Mass. A rosary will be said at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. Interment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, in Baraboo. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at St. Clare Meadows Care Center for the exceptional care given to Sis during her stay.
